Double anniversary: 15 years 1A, 25 years Linux

1A First Alternative was established on August 16, 2001. This means we have been providing Enterprise ICT for an SME price based on open source for 15 years already!

15 jaar

15 years of 1A

Terms such as scalability, disaster recovery or cloud can cause SME entrepeneurs sleepless nights. After all, they do not have an ICT team at their disposal to implement and manage it all. SME entrepreneurs with a 1A ICT environment are guaranteed a good night’s sleep, because all ICT is taken care of by the 1A-partner and 1A. By using standardization and open source software, we can efficiently maintain many environments and ensure the quality of ICT services without having to reserve a million euros worth of budget. We have kept our knowledge and expertise of ICT up to date over the last 15 years so you do not have to.

That’s Enterprise ICT for an SME price based on open source! And we are ready for the next 15 years…

25 year of Linux

The core of our services is the 1A-server, which runs on Linux. According to Wikipedia, this popular operating system is used on approximately 40% of all servers. Android devices account for approximately 55% of the smartphones and tablets. Almost all supercomputers run on Linux.

Linux has been around for 25 years now. The founder, Linus Torvalds, at the official introduction of Linux on August 25, 1991 saw only a very modest role for his project. “I’m working on a free operating system (just a hobby, will not be big and professional like GNU) for 386(486) AT clones,” he wrote on the comp.os.minix message board. (Quote from agconnect.nl).

Today we know better! After 15 years we can say with utter conviction: Linux servers are robust, scalable, manageable, secure and flexible.
