Making internal services available on the Internet

More and more companies want to make certain internal services available on the Internet. These are usually internal websites or the ability to connect to an internal PC via Remote Desktop Connection (often referred to as RDP).

It is now possible for the 1A-partner to set this up easily for their customers with two new features:

  • Reverse Proxies: make internal websites available on the Internet. All configured Reverse Proxies are visible for 1A administrators in the Webmanager (internet → reverse proxy).
  • Port Forwards: forward all other internal services, such as RDP, to internal computers. Configured Port Forwards are not visible in the Webmanager.

Please contact your 1A partner if you want to make internal services available on the Internet.

1A-manager: internet: Reverse Proxy

For those interested we have included a brief explanation.

Reverse Proxies

With this feature internal websites can be made available on the Internet. All configured Reverse Proxies are visible for 1A administrators in the Webmanager (internet → reverse proxy).

Suppose a website http://website.network.local/ exists. First, an Internet name should be created (eg website.company.com) and linked to the external IP address by your DNS provider (often the 1A partner).

This Internet name can then be coupled to the internal website by the 1A partner. From then on, the internal website is accessible on the Internet athttp://website.company.com/.

Please note: If your internal website is running onhttp://website.network.local/application/, for example, the external site will also behttp://website.company.com/application/.

Port Forwards

Other internal services, such as RDP, can be made available with so-called Port Forwards by the 1A partner. For this, an external port has to be selected, which is linked to the internal IP address of the computer where the service is running and to the internal port on which the service is available. This works for all services that use Internet protocol UDP or TCP. The service is then accessible via the Internet on the selected port at the Internet address of your 1A server, which can be found on the Server Info page. If you can not find this page, please refer to the 1A manual “Information about your 1A server” »

RDP naar externe poortExample: Your 1A server is accessible on the Internet at 1a.company.com and your 1A partner forwards port 3390/tcp to your internal PC at 3389/tcp (the default port for RDP). You can then connect to your internal PC from the Internet by launching the program Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe) and entering 1a.company.com:3390 in the field “Computer:”.
